Ever travel somewhere far out of your country yet still feel like you’re at home? You really will feel this way when you visit Cebu especially if you’re from Europe, this not just because of the weather though but because of the Gothic churches found in Cebu and to its neighboring islands. Most century old churches in Cebu is inspired by the churches in Spain and some other Western churches like the Basílica de Santiago. What’s more interesting about these churches is the materials use to build them, they’re coral stones and eggs to cement them together but lasts till now.

Among the thousands of cultural structures that’s being preserved here in Cebu are Fuerza de San Pedro which was built in 1738 and some of the famous Baroque Churches of the Philippines like the Baclayon Church in Bohol which was built in 1717 and it also have a small museum beside it with the preserved centuries-old religious relics and other artifacts dating back to the 16th century. But the famous church here in Cebu is the Basilica de Santo Nino. It was built purportedly on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño, a sculpture depicting the Holy Child Jesus found by Spanish explorers in 1565 preserved in a burned wooden box which was left behind during the 1521 Magellan expedition.

There is also Patrocinio de Maria Church which is located in Boljoon, Cebu and was built in 1599 under the direction of the Augustinians. The jurisdiction over the church was then transferred to the Jesuits in 1737. Conceived as a fortress-church, which stands on a hill overlooking the sea, with features that provide safety for the parishioners against Speriodic Moro raids.

San Fernando Rey Parish Church in Liloan, Cebu is somehow different as it faces the mountains to the West, whereas most churches face the sea to the East. It was believed that the church’s direction has a symbolic significance related to church rites.

This is probably the reason why most Europeans that have visited Philippines feels like they never leave their country as it feels home when seeing these type of churches. There are lot more interesting churches around Cebu like Dumanjug Church, Bantayan Church, Carcar Church, Argao Church, Dalaguete Church and Naga Church.

Anyway, All foreigners Not just Europeans will really feel at home when they visit Cebu not because of these cultural structures but would feel like staying in the hostels in London because of Cebuano’s hospitality.

The Port Seafood Restaurant, you can tell what they will offer to serve on your table by the name itself. Actually, they don’t just offer seafood such as grilled squid, shrimp, crabs, fishes and some sea grasses but also pastas, Lumpia Shanghai, half cooked mixed vegetables and more.

And of course The Port also offer some of typical Filipino dishes for Filipinos that go out to eat outside but will eat the same type of food they cook at home everyday like beef stew, fried chicken, grilled bangus and etc. As for restaurant owners, take this as an advice because no matter what type of restaurant you are operating, some Filipinos will always look for a familiar food to eat. It may be funny though but its true, they may visit a Japanese Restaurant but they will be looking for street food. Believe it! I sometimes do this, you can imagine me looking for Adobo inside a Korean Restaurant – huh! beat that.

Anyway, The Port Seafood Restaurant is located at the lower lobby of Waterfront Hotel, a classy lodging facility along Salinas Drive within the Lahug, Cebu City.
Some people actually believed that the Gothic Carmelite Chapel is miraculous that whenever you pray for something you want or achieve in life such as a good husband or passing a board exam will be granted. This might just be true because a friend’s wish was granted. She just wrote her prayers to a piece of paper and drop it to boxes just beside the church.

To give thanks to God, she suggested that it might be better to offer not just candles or anything but also pack of tampons during Sunday mass, nuns who will pray over your wishes will really be thankful. Halleluiah! Okay, that’s NOT funny.

Anyway, If you feel Simala Church is just too far to travel, visit Carmelite Church located in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, just in front of the NeoNeo Grill Restaurant. Simala Church by the way is also believed to be miraculous.

Religious Heritage

Like any Spanish colony where Catholicism is the predominant religion, churches of different sizes and styles have been constructed all over the archipelago of the Philippines. In the countrysides of Cebu, there are very old churches that have withstood the test of time and continue to foster the Catholic belief of the Cebuanos.

In the southern municipality of Naga, a Muslim-inspired Moorish cathedral built in coral stone, is the pride of the locals. It was built in the 17th century.

In the city proper, standing majestically in the heart of the city is the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, named after the Santo Nino or Child Jesus who is the patron saint of Cebu City. It is believed to be miraculous and have been in existence even before 1521, when it was given as a gift to Queen Juana and Rajah Humabon. They were the first Filipinos who were baptized in the Catholic belief.

Of course, there is the Taoist temple also which is located inside the posh subdivision of Beverly Hills on top of a 99-step hill. From its location, one can get a panoramic view of the city and the nearby island of Mactan.

Further down south, in the municipality of Carcar, is St. Catherine’s Church which took six years to finish. It is popular for its byzantine designed altar and bell towers shaped like minarets.

Going further down will take you to the coastal municipality of Argao which is not only famous for its beaches but also of handwoven blanket industry which was introduced in the 17th century. A well-preserved church complex can also be found here.

Down in Dalaguete is a church complex similar to that of Argao because Dalaguete used to be annexed to Argao, until it was proclaimed independent in 1711. The church is dedicated to San Guillermo and the altars are shaped like vases with rococo motif.

Creativity and Trade

The Cebuanos are innately artistic and creative and they have nurtured this creativity over the centuries and have helped develop the province economically. Most of their products have become famous all over the world and even local artisans have become world-famous.

You will never ran out of things you want for presents, local flavour and what-have-you in Carbon Market. It is the main depot of market goods from all over the province. A few roads away, is the famous Colon Street. It is the oldest street in the country and many malls are located here to cater to all kinds of market.

Among the thriving industries in the province are the guitar-making and the rattan furniture industry. The rattan furniture is so expertly-handcrafted that they are export quality. The locally-produced guitars can compete with the imported ones in terms of quality and standards.

For the nature lover and Sun-worshiper

Cebu is famous for its breathtaking beach resorts and dive-sites. Being an island province, virtually its entire coastline is a place for swimming and for other activities such as snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing. Even more remarkable is the fact that beach resorts are very accessible from the city proper.

Dive-sites in Cebu vary in their nature and standards. Some dive-sites are good for beginners, while others are for the more experienced ones. Most dive-sites in Cebu can be found in the islands of Mactan and Olango and for the more advanced divers, Moalboal is the diving place to be. The area around Moalboal is said to be characterized by undersea caves, rich corals and bigger kinds of fish. Another island good for diving is the Badian Island because of the unique biodiversity and colorful corals. A beach resort called Panagsama located at a fishing village west of Moalboal is a delightful getaway with its crystal clear water and unexplored white sand. Other southern municipalities that have exquisite beach resorts for both public and private use are Argao and Dalaguete. Going northward, the towns of Liloan, Consolacion, Compostela, Danao and Carmen are popular weekend getaways where people can enjoy a dip in the sparkling waters and family picnics in the white sand beaches.

Just right in front of the Boljoon Public Market is where you can see the entrance gate of Mediong Seaside Resort. You might not be impressed just when you see their messy gate as its under construction as of now but definitely a great place to stay.

It should be great if you arrived in Mediong’s Seaside during morning which is high tide which is about probably 8:00 AM. Its best to be there before sunset because by that time it would be low tide. By 4:00 PM, you’ll have to go further from the shore so you can swim in their beach. But then anyway, you can still enjoy swimming on their pool.

Mediong’s Seaside Escape is of course located in Boljoon, Cebu. It is located in the southern east of Cebu and its 2 hours 20 minutes ride from the city, you can take a bus ride in South Bus Terminal near the Emall [Elizabeth Mall]. Mediong Seaside Escape is the heart of Boljoon and is facing Boljoon public market.
Definitely worth visiting!

Just beside the road going to Argao and about few kilometers from Simala Church lies a beautiful paradise named Kalumpang Beach Resort. Anyone could easily notice the stone walls of this resort just along the way going to Poblacion, Argao. Their beach has shallow water and clear enough. In fact the water is clear enough to see some sea urchins so you can avoid while you dive. Definitely a great place for snorkeling. I’m not sure though but I think the owner of the resort is the Argao Mayor Galeos.

The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist Church in Simala, Sibonga is I think the most visited place for people asking for guidance of the Blessed Holy Mary. People believed Holy Mary will actually give what they’d ask from her such as career, health and relationship. In fact you’ll have to light an specific candle color to whatever you wanted to ask.

The church is under construction when i was there yet it is still open for everyone who will visit, The church is so huge that you can’t tour for just an hour. Their documentations are presented to the visitors so I have read lots of those documents and was surprise the church decades ago was just an old small house. Yet imagine what it looks today.

How to get to Simala, Sibonga?
If you’re to go there by bus, then chose the going to Argao bus in South Bus Terminal and you’ll reach there. You’ll know when you’re already near to Simala because of the Carcar bus stop. And after all, all corners I think has a signage saying “Simala, Sibonga”

Note: Don’t wear your sexy outfit when going there. More Images here.

CEBU, Philippines – The Police Regional Office-7 has assured the security of the tourists visiting the different resorts in Central Visayas during the Holy Week.

The assurance was made by the different chiefs of police in the provinces of Region-7 during yesterday’s Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis. The provincial directors of Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor admitted that they are expecting an increase of tourist arrivals in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

However, they assured that security management is in place to ensure the safety of the visitors.

Senior Supt. Constantino Paul Barot, Jr., director of Bohol Provincial Police Office, said they have established Police Action Centers in the province particularly in seaports and bus terminals and intensified its police visibility.

Barot said among the areas where police visibility patrol was beefed-up is in Panglao resort, a known diving location. Panglao resort is reportedly fully-booked for the Lenten season.

In Negros Oriental, Provincial Police Office director Rey Lyndon Lawas said he deployed at least 50 tourist police in the province’s tourist attractions and activity areas.

Anticipating possible attacks from the rebels, Lawas also deployed personnel to vital installations in the province in coordination with the 302nd Brigade of the Philippine Army.

Lawas said he also deployed policemen on board public utility vehicles starting yesterday to establish linkages with the passengers.

The Highway Patrol Group-7 was also advised to prevent apprehending motorists for minor violations.

All police officials said there has not been any tourist-related crime that occurred in their respective jurisdictions so far in line with the observance of the Holy Week.

Since Saturday, all police units in the region have been placed under red alert.

Meanwhile, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has reminded the public to ensure the safety of their houses before going anywhere else to observe the Holy Week.

Rama, in his press conference yesterday afternoon, urged the people who would go on vacation to be vigilant so that they will not fall victim to criminal elements.

Thieves usually exploit this Holy Week vacation to sneak into vacant houses while members of the household take advantage of the long vacation.

“Let us be vigilant all the time so that we will not be hearing bad news on the following day,” Rama said. —(FREEMAN)

This is probably the reason why some of the resorts these days didn’t allow us to have a party and get drunk. I still did enjoy our island hopping yesterday. I’m not sure if bantayan island allow tourists to have parties this lent though.
